The Government of Ghana has received another batch of 80 Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa following the recent wave of xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in parts of that country.
The returnees arrived at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra under the second phase of the government’s ongoing evacuation exercise since the rescue operations commenced in May 2026.
Receiving the group on behalf of the government, the Head of Delivery Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Alexander Grant Ntrakwa, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the returnees as they resettle and reintegrate into their respective communities.
Ntrakwa encouraged the evacuees to draw strength from the skills and experiences acquired during their stay in South Africa to rebuild their lives and contribute to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
He further announced that modest financial packages and support services had been allocated under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama to assist the evacuees with immediate resettlement needs.
Representatives from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Red Cross Society, and Port Health authorities were present at the airport to handle screening, medical care, and logistics.
Speaking on behalf of the group, one of the evacuees expressed deep appreciation to the Government of Ghana, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria, and all supporting agencies for securing their safe return.
