The Food and Drug Authority has emphasized the need for the Ghanaian public to report side effect medications they use.
According to the FDA these reports can be made using reporting forms available in healthcare facilities and community pharmacies designated as patient safety centers or the Med Safety App.
“The Med Safety App is an electronic reporting tool that is convenient to use. It is freely available on app store or Google play store,” the FDA stated.
The FDA’s advice was contained in a statement issued by the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority Delese Mimi Darko to mark the 2023 a global #MedSafetyWeek Campaign.
The campaign is a collaboration involving more than 80 medicines regulatory agencies and several non-governmental organizations and aims to “raise awareness about the importance of reporting side effects of medicines.”
“With the theme: ‘Who can report?’, this year’s campaign will focus on the key role of every patient/caregiver, doctor, nurse and pharmacist who reports a side effect and contributes to medicine safety”
The week-long Medicine Safety Campaign would start from November 6 to November 12, 2023.
The FDA in a statement said the Ghanaian campaign’s goal is to identify risks associated with medicines, enabling the authority to take appropriate regulatory action to enhance medicine safety.
The authority has established a safety monitoring system to detect and analyze medicine side effects, gathering more information about known side effects and discovering new ones.
