The Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has officially announced a comprehensive, week-long series of activities to commemorate the 80th United Nations Day, underscoring Ghana’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism, global peace, and sustainable development.
The commemoration, which is scheduled to run from October 18 to October 24, 2025 is themed “Ghana and the UN: Shared Responsibility for a Better Tomorrow. A theme which directly aligns with the nation’s recent strong advocacy for the ‘Reset Agenda’ within the UN and the global financial architecture, as championed by President John Dramani Mahama during his address at the 80th UN General Assembly (UNGA80).
The national commemoration will officially begin on Saturday, October 18, with a major UN Day Peace Walk and Float. The walk, designed to promote public health, peace, and awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is scheduled to commence from the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) and proceed along a designated route in the capital. The event is expected to draw a diverse crowd, including members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, security agencies, civil society organizations, and the general public.
Another programme activity scheduled for the week-long commemoration is a tree planting exercise to be conducted on the 21st of October. This exercise is themed; 8 trees for 8 decades and is a sign of the UN’s commitment to environmental sustainability and Ghana’s dedication to climate resilience and ecosystem restoration
A central feature of the week, according to a press release from the Ministry will be a high-level symposium on UN Security Council and Global Financial Architecture Reform, directly reflecting the President’s call for Africa to have a greater voice and representation in multilateral institutions.
This event is expected to include a dedicated panel discussion featuring former diplomats, academia, and youth leaders to explore Ghana’s historical role and future contributions to shaping the UN, echoing the President’s bold declaration that “The future is African.”
Furthermore, a series of Public Lectures and Educational Outreach events are scheduled for various universities and regional capitals. These forums will focus on the local implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and provide updates on the progress of Ghana’s national agenda, ‘Resetting Ghana.’
The activities will officially come to a close with a solemn Official Flag-Raising Ceremony and Wreath Laying, to be held on October 24 (UN Day) at the forecourt of the State House, organized in collaboration with the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office in Ghana.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, urged all citizens, civil society organisations, and media partners to actively participate in the scheduled activities to ensure a successful and impactful commemoration of the United Nations Day.
