In a strategic move to bolster tax compliance and demystify Ghana’s tax policies, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced a renewed collaboration with the media aimed at deepening public understanding of taxation.
At a maiden engagement held with media professionals in Accra, the Commissioner, Support Service Department of the GRA, Hon. Alex Adomako Mensah, emphasized the critical role of public education in enhancing the Authority’s revenue mobilization efforts.
“There is an urgent need to clarify our tax policies and operations to the Ghanaian public,” Mr. Adomako Mensah said. “Awareness and education are key factors that can propel the work of the GRA, hence our decision to collaborate more closely with the media.”
The Commissioner, SSD noted that Ghana’s development heavily depends on domestic revenue, making it imperative for the GRA to be supported in fulfilling its core mandate of tax collection. He lamented the widespread misinformation surrounding the GRA’s work, adding that the media can play a vital role in correcting these misconceptions.
“When people understand why they must pay taxes and how those taxes are used, they become more willing to comply. That makes our job easier,” he explained.
To this end, Mr. Adomako Mensah announced the rollout of a nationwide tax education campaign designed to reach individuals and businesses across all sectors. The campaign will involve public forums, media broadcasts and stakeholder engagements to sensitize Ghanaians about their civic responsibility to pay taxes.
The event brought together representatives from major media houses and officials from all divisions of the GRA. Participants expressed strong support for the initiative, with many pledging to use their platforms to help bridge the information gap on tax-related matters.
The GRA hopes that through sustained media partnerships, the public will not only become more informed but also more proactive in fulfilling their tax obligations.
