Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang this morning led a solemn ceremony to mark the 77th anniversary of the 28th February 1948 Christiansborg shooting. She was joined by the Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and the Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak in paying tribute to the fallen heroes.
The annual event, which included a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony, honors the memory of three ex-servicemen, Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey who were shot and killed by colonial police in 1948 while marching to the Osu Castle to present a petition to the then Governor.
The petition expressed the soldiers’ dissatisfaction with the meager gratuity payments they received after their service in World War II. Their peaceful demonstration followed failed negotiations with the colonial authorities for fair compensation.
As part of the ceremony, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang along with the Defence and Interior Ministers, laid a wreath on behalf of the government and people of Ghana.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, laid a wreath on behalf of the security services while the Veterans Association of Ghana and families of the three fallen soldiers also paid tribute with wreaths to commemorate the occasion.
