The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has strongly reaffirmed his commitment to restoring and enforcing decorum within the legislative body, following recent disruptive events during the vetting of Supreme Court nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.
Addressing Members of Parliament Today November 11, 2025, Bagbin emphasised the paramount importance of upholding parliamentary discipline in strict adherence to the House’s Standing Orders.
The Speaker explicitly reminded members that the Standing Orders mandate the maintenance of order and decorum in both the Chamber and Committee meetings, prohibiting the use of offensive, insulting, or unbecoming language.
He specifically cited Order 123(3), which cautions against imputing improper motives or employing disrespectful words likely to cause offence. Bagbin stressed that parliamentary proceedings must at all times reflect the dignity and integrity of Parliament as a crucial organ of the state.
Crucially, the Speaker reaffirmed Parliament’s unwavering respect for the Judiciary as a co-equal arm of government, as enshrined under Article 125(1) of the 1992 Constitution. He further urged members to remain dedicated to strengthening the relationship between the Legislature and the Judiciary in their collective service to the Ghanaian people and the protection of the nation’s constitutional democracy.
On behalf of the entire Parliament, the Speaker extended the House’s deepest apology to the Judiciary, along with an assurance of continued respect for the institution and its esteemed members.
Alban Bagbin concluded with a stark warning to the MPs, cautioning that he would return to address issues of decency, discipline, and decorum this time, “with a hammer, not the usual one,” signaling a zero-tolerance approach to future breaches.
