The Convention People’s Party has called on the Nana Akufo-Addo led government to absorb recent increases in electricity and water tariffs.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) this week announced 27.15% and 21.55% increases in electricity and water tariffs to take effect from September 1.
But the CPP in a statement issued and signed by its General Secretary Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah said “Ghanaians cannot add on the burden of the of a tariff increase in Electricity and water”.
The CPP is of the opinion that “such a move would erode completely the household income of most Ghanaians who cannot even bear to have one square meal a day a day and the effect of high transport fares, a rise in food prices, hikes in the prices of fuel and other commodities.”
The CPP is further proposing that government uses proceeds from the COVID-19 levy to fund the absorption of the tariff increments.
The absorption of the tariffs means government must provide utility providers with the needed financial support for the smooth running of their operations and the CPP believes the proceeds from the COVID-19 levy can pay for this venture.
