Founding President of IMANI Center for Policy and Education Franklin Cudjoe is surprised the Electoral Commission is in what he calls a mad rush to pass a new Constitutional Instrument to regulate elections.
According the rush is baffling in the wake of the challenges and difficulties admitted by the National Identification Authority in ensuring that every qualified Ghanaian is duly registered.
The Electoral Commission has come under intense criticism for insisting on pushing through a Constitutional Instrument that will make the Ghana Card issued by the NIA the only form of identification required register to vote.
The CI if passed will outlaw the use of passport and the vouching system for identification purposes during voter registration as CI 91 and 126 will be repealed.
Speaking to Sena Nombo in an interview on Radio Gold Franklin Cudjoe said the EC’s insistence does not add up.
He told the host of the Gold Morning Conversation the new law has the tendency of rendering the Electoral Commission irrelevant.
Franklin Cudjoe argued that the CI efficiently hands control of the voter registration process to the NIA and not the EC as anticipated by the constitution.
He said the EC losing control of voter registration will effectively render the EC irrelevant hence the Commission can be scrapped in favour of an NIA led election management body.
