Good governance advocate and a fellow of the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development ( CDD-Ghana), Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, known widely as Kwaku Azar, has condemned the coup in Guinea, praying against a coup in Ghana.
He stressed that constitutions should not be changed or thrown away but ought to be amended in accordance with laid down procedure, adding that he is opposed to attempts to overthrow constitutions.
GOGO[ Good Governance] affirms its commitment to the principle that Constitutions are neither immutable nor disposable.
Consequently, we welcome amendments to the instrument but only in strict conformance with the path specified therein.
At the same time, we are fiercely opposed to any and all attempts to overthrow, abrogate, abort, change or otherwise dispose of the instrument whether such action is facilitated by the gun or the pen, the pinzgauer or aboboyaa, and by prayer or witchcraft,” he said.
He, therefore, condemned the coup in Guinea (Guinea Conakry), pledging his readiness to defend Ghana’s constitution. He further stated that he does not take persons calling for a new constitution for Ghana but who fail to understand that constitutions are neither immutable nor disposal seriously.
“Accordingly, we cannot find words strong enough to condemn the putsch in Conakry and reiterate our resolve to preserve, defend and uphold the 5th Ghanafuo Constitution.
GOGO does not take seriously those who, on one hand, claim they want a new Constitution while simultaneously, even if only implicitly, declaring that they do not take seriously the concept of the supremacy of a duly promulgated existing Constitution,” he stressed.
The Government of President Alpha Condé has been toppled by the military led by Colonel Mamady Doumbaya. Ghanaians are divided on the coup with some condemning it and others supporting and suggesting a similar thing could happen in Ghana if things don’t improve.
Kwaku Azar has long held that constitutions must not be overthrown by coups nor changed.
