On the sixth anniversary of its operations in Ghana, Zipline engaged the media with a tour of one of its facilities located in Anum, in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.
During the tour, Shemau Muniru, Partnership Manager at Zipline, announced that the company—one of the world’s largest autonomous logistics systems—has surpassed a major milestone, delivering over 8.4 million medical products across the country.
She highlighted Zipline’s significant contribution to Ghana’s healthcare system, particularly in hard-to-reach and underserved areas.
According to her, while drones are the most visible symbol of Zipline Ghana’s operations, the company’s true value lies far beyond the skies.
“In fact, drone flights account for just over 1% of Zipline’s entire health logistics system. The rest is anchored in advanced inventory management, centralized storage, and data-driven forecasting that is transforming healthcare delivery across Ghana. Many people are not even aware of this,” she said.
Mr. Daniel Kwaku Merki, Head of Zipline Ghana, emphasized that since its launch in 2019, the company has partnered closely with the Government of Ghana to provide reliable, on-demand delivery of essential medical supplies.
He said Zipline’s six drone distribution hubs have served more than 3,000 hospitals, health centres, and CHPS compounds across 14 regions, delivering medications for malaria, HIV, TB, maternal health, blood products, and nutritional supplements.
He added that since 2022 alone, 9,698 lives have been saved through Zipline’s services—75% of which were emergency deliveries in Northern Ghana. More than 1,600 of those cases involved snakebite victims who might not have survived without timely intervention.
“Our approach in Ghana is simple but powerful. We’ve built a fast, reliable storage and delivery system that ensures essential medicines and supplies reach people exactly when they need them. This demand-driven model eliminates stockouts, strengthens trust in the healthcare system, and reduces both the frequency and severity of diseases. We have delivered over 17 million vaccine doses, including 3.4 million COVID-19 doses,” he stated.
Madam Sandra Dede Ayayi, in charge of the Tsorxor CHPS compound, also acknowledged Zipline’s impact on her community. She noted that without Zipline, many lives would have been lost, as residents often require between GH₵50 and GH₵70 to reach the nearest referral facility—an amount many cannot afford.
Zipline’s operations in Ghana have had a profound impact on population health and national development goals, especially in areas such as antenatal care and in-facility births.
In the Ashanti Region, facilities served by Zipline recorded a 20% increase in antenatal visits, a 25% increase in skilled deliveries, and a 56% drop in maternal deaths compared to non-Zipline areas.
