President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering women, as he joined world leaders at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing, China.
The two-day summit, hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping and UN Women, marks the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. It brings together global leaders to renew their dedication to the ideals of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
Speaking at the summit, President Mahama emphasized that women’s empowerment remains central to Ghana’s national development agenda.
“No nation can achieve sustainable development if half of its population is left behind,” President Mahama said. “Ghana continues to invest in education, healthcare, and enterprise development for women and girls, because we believe that empowering women transforms families, communities, and our entire economy.”
While in Beijing, President Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama are also engaging in a series of bilateral and investment-focused meetings aimed at strengthening Ghana–China relations.
President Mahama is expected to hold discussions with President Xi Jinping and the Premier of the State Council, Li Qiang, to explore new areas of cooperation in infrastructure, trade, and investment.
He will also host a Presidential Investment Forum that will bring together Ghanaian and Chinese business leaders to discuss partnerships and explore opportunities in agribusiness, industry, and export development.
“Ghana remains open for business and partnership,” President Mahama noted. “Our focus is on creating jobs and value through innovation, industry, and strong collaboration with our friends in China.”
The President’s delegation includes Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry; Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection; Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Foreign Affairs; Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways; and Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Deputy Minister for Finance.
Other officials accompanying the President are Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President; Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Presidential Advisor and Special Aide; Shamima Muslim, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson; and Nana Yaa Gyantuah, Presidential Staffer.
The delegation will also visit Fujian Province to interact with Chinese companies already operating in Ghana and to deepen partnerships in industrial development.
The engagements are expected to bolster Ghana’s long-standing friendship with China and enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest, while reinforcing President Mahama’s advocacy for inclusive growth and women’s empowerment across the African continent.
