Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has held in-depth discussions with Portage Energy, a clean energy company specialising in sustainable waste management and waste to energy solutions including the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The engagement forms part of government’s efforts to explore innovative, technology-driven approaches to Ghana’s waste management challenges.

Addressing the delegation, the Vice President reaffirmed government’s commitment to partnerships that genuinely advance national interests.

She emphasised that Ghana’s current economic and policy environment requires a new kind of development cooperation one rooted in transparency, responsibility and shared benefit.

“In the economic and political climate we find ourselves in today, Ghana is not interested in relationships built on slogans or promises that never materialise,” she stated. “We are seeking partnerships that are transparent, that respect our national priorities, and that ensure the Ghanaian people remain the ultimate beneficiaries.”

She further stressed that effective waste management has become indispensable for a growing economy like Ghana’s.

“Waste management is directly linked to public health, environmental sustainability, industrial growth, and even the overall appeal of our cities,” she noted. “Any partnership we enter must therefore strengthen our national systems and deliver measurable, long-term development outcomes.”

“Our discussions today show what is possible when innovation is aligned with national interest,” she said. “We look forward to more detailed technical conversations as we explore a sustainable, technically sound, and mutually beneficial partnership.”

Portage Energy officials welcomed government’s emphasis on transparency and value driven cooperation and expressed their readiness to continue working with relevant state institutions.

Both parties agreed to advance discussions in the coming weeks as they consider practical frameworks to support Ghana’s long-term waste-to-energy and sustainability objectives.
