The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the arrest and detention of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing the action as politically motivated and calling for due process to be respected.
Mr. Aboagye was reportedly arrested by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra International Airport on Sunday 12 April 2026. He remains in EOCO custody, although his exact place of detention has not been disclosed.

As of the time of filing this report, EOCO had not publicly stated the reason for the arrest or confirmed whether Mr. Aboagye was under investigation.
Reacting to the development, senior officials of the NPP questioned the circumstances surrounding the arrest, insisting that Mr. Aboagye had not received any prior invitation from EOCO or been informed of any alleged offence.
National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, said the party was “completely bemused” by EOCO’s actions.
“Miracles has not received any invitation from EOCO. He has not been informed of any wrongdoing. He has not been told that he is under any form of investigation,” he stated.
The party maintained that while it supports accountability and is prepared to cooperate with any lawful investigation involving its members, state institutions must adhere to established legal procedures and respect the rights of individuals.
Several NPP figures also criticised the arrest, with former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah warning that the incident could set what he described as “a dangerous precedent” for Ghana’s democracy.
According to the NPP, the arrest raises concerns about the possible use of state institutions to target political opponents, an allegation the party says undermines public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.
The incident has generated significant political attention, with the NPP demanding transparency over the circumstances of Mr. Aboagye’s arrest and the legal basis for his continued detention.
