Ghana has announced a landmark shift in its immigration policy, introducing a Free Visa initiative for all African nationals, a move government officials say will boost regional integration while maintaining strict security controls.
The policy, announced by President John Dramani Mahama, will allow Africans to apply for visas to Ghana without paying any fees. However, authorities have clarified that the waiver does not eliminate the need for visa applications or security checks.
Under the new framework, all travelers—including African applicants—will still undergo a full visa screening process. The only difference is that African applicants will not be charged for the service.
Central to the initiative is the rollout of a new electronic visa system, expected to begin next month. The e-Visa platform will serve as the sole application channel for all travelers seeking entry into Ghana, making the process more efficient and transparent.
Officials say the system will be integrated with Ghana’s Advanced Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record (API-PNR) system, as well as international crime databases. This will enable consular officers to conduct thorough background checks on applicants before granting approval.
Government has stressed that individuals with criminal records or deemed security risks will be denied entry, reinforcing that the policy does not equate to automatic admission into the country.
“There will be no unvetted entries into Ghana,” officials emphasized, noting that significant investments have been made by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Transport to ensure a secure and technologically advanced system.
The Free Visa for Africans policy is set to officially take effect on May 25, 2026—Africa Day—marking a symbolic commitment to continental unity.
Although a similar policy was announced in 2024 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, it was not implemented due to the absence of the necessary technical and security infrastructure.
With the new systems now in place, the government says Ghana is ready to welcome Africans under a modernized and secure visa regime aimed at strengthening mobility across the continent.
