President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that Ghana will soon elect its first female president.
Speaking at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Beijing, China, the President said, “I’m confident that in the very near future, our women will break the glass ceiling, and there will be a woman president in the Republic of Ghana.”
President Mahama highlighted Ghana’s recent progress in promoting gender equality, noting the historic election of a female Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman in 2024. He added that more women are now serving in key national institutions, including the judiciary and security services.
“Women deserve a seat at the highest decision-making table. They are not just symbolic gestures,” he stressed.
The President outlined several initiatives aimed at empowering women and girls, such as strengthening the Domestic Violence Unit of the Ghana Police Service to handle abuse cases more effectively. He also referenced Ghana’s Affirmative Action Bill, which targets a 50-50 gender parity in leadership roles by 2030.
“To further empower women locally, we’ve introduced the Women’s Bank,” President Mahama announced, drawing applause from the audience.
He also emphasized the need for African leaders to help women overcome poverty, describing the African woman as “indeed vulnerable.”
During his visit, President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral meetings, including talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and sign several memoranda of understanding to strengthen Ghana-China relations.
