The Birmingham Branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has “strongly urged” President Nana Addo Danqua Akufo-Addo to sack embattled Minister of Health Kweku Agyemang Manu.
NDC Birmingham says its call has been necessitated by the “recalcitrant, belligerent stance not to resign from post despite the persistent and stentorian calls from Ghanaians”.
President Akufo-Addo on a tour of the Bono region likened the scrutiny that the minister has come under since from Ghanaians to ‘slaps’ while his Chief of Staff has granted the minister a two weeks leave on ‘personal grounds’
The NDC Birmingham in a statement issued by its Communication Secretary Peter M. Dzidza however says points out that the minister’s conduct in moves to procure the Sputnik V vaccine acted in “fragrant disregard for the World Health Organization (WHO) that sounded series of cautions to countries not to involve middlemen in the procurement of vaccines for their citizens”.
“The indecent haste of the Ministry to sign the Sputnik V vaccine contract made him to ignore both cabinet and parliamentary approval in this all-important international agreement.”
“He also did not involve any technical person in this multi-million international contract which had to do with a very serious product like vaccines,” NDC Birmingham further stated.
NDC Birmingham is convinced that that the behaviour of the minister was evidence of a ploy to exploit the pandemic to enrich himself thus “retaining him as the Health Minister will worsen the plight of Ghanaians and lead the country into more debt”.
“We strongly urge the President of the Republic to immediately fire Mr. Agyeman Manu.”
“Ghana has no room for such unconscionable public office holder who will not hesitate to indulge in shady deals and sign such a major contract only to claim after being exposed that he was “confused” or “not thinking right” at the time he signed the Sputnik V contract,” NDC Birmingham stated.
