Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, has called for the resignation of Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, urging him to step down from his position and subject himself to an investigation. The demand comes in the wake of explosive allegations made by Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the high-profile ambulance case involving Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson.
Jakpa, in a shocking courtroom revelation, accused the Attorney General of pressuring him to implicate Ato Forson, allegedly seeking to secure the Minority Leader’s prosecution. The witness claimed to possess evidence to support his allegations, hinting at the possibility of releasing damning information if pushed to the wall.
Reacting to the bombshell accusations, Xavier Sosu took to social media to express his grave concerns, emphasizing the need for immediate action. In a scathing post, the Madina MP described the courtroom extract of Jakpa’s testimony as “damning,” asserting that it “casts a serious slur on the integrity of our justice system.”
Sosu argued that if the Attorney General had indeed engaged in the alleged acts, it would have been in the best interest of the nation for him to resign or step aside from the prosecution of the case, allowing for a thorough investigation into his conduct. The MP’s call for accountability underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential implications for the credibility of Ghana’s legal system.
Drawing attention to the LEGAL PROFESSION (PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT AND ETIQUETTE) RULES, 2020, (L.I. 2423), Sosu highlighted several provisions that the Attorney General may have potentially breached. These include Rules 13, 40, 56(2)(b), and 89, which govern the conduct of lawyers in their interactions with represented persons, their responsibilities as prosecutors, and the prohibition of dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation.
Sosu’s post painted a picture of an Attorney General who had brought his office into “serious disrepute,” engaging in “dishonorable conduct” that had plunged the entire criminal justice system into a “serious credibility crisis.” The MP’s strong words reflect the growing concern among legal professionals and the public alike about the integrity of those entrusted with upholding the law.
As the Deputy Ranking Member of the Constitutional, Legal & Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament, Sosu’s call for an investigation and punishment, if the allegations are proven true, carries significant weight. The demand for accountability at the highest levels of the justice system has sent shockwaves through the nation, with many eagerly awaiting the Attorney General’s response and the potential fallout from this explosive development.
The ambulance case, which has already gripped the nation’s attention, has now taken on an even more dramatic turn, with the credibility of the prosecution and the impartiality of the Attorney General’s office under intense scrutiny. As the legal community and the public grapple with the implications of Jakpa’s allegations, the pressure mounts on the Attorney General to address the accusations head-on and take decisive action to restore faith in the justice system.
The coming days and weeks will be crucial in determining the fate of the Attorney General and the trajectory of the Ambulance case. With the eyes of the nation fixed on this unfolding drama, the demand for transparency, accountability, and the preservation of the rule of law has never been more urgent.
