In a bid to promote environmental cleanliness and reduce the risk of flooding, the Sanitation Brigade for Development, a subsidiary of the Young Progressive Network in collaboration with the Assembly Member for the Oblogo Electoral Area, has launched an environmental sanitation cleanup exercise.
This initiative focuses on desilting choked drains across the Oblogo Electoral Area, one of the flood-prone zones within the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly.
With the rainy season approaching, both institutions recognize the urgency of the exercise, which aims to minimize the risk of flooding and its associated health hazards.
Dubbed the “Good Friday Clean-Up Exercise,” the initiative began with a comprehensive assessment of the area’s drainage and sanitation challenges.
Following this, it was agreed that the cleanup efforts will continue bi-weekly as part of a long-term strategy to maintain clean and free-flowing gutters.
Speaking during the exercise, Patrick Asford Boadu, Convener for the Young Progressive Network and Sanitation Brigade for Development, emphasized the need to support Assembly Members with sanitation logistics.
He noted, “Our goal is to empower local authorities to undertake frequent clean-up campaigns—not just during the rainy season.”
He also encouraged the youth to actively participate in such initiatives, and advocated for the provision of litter bins at strategic locations to curb indiscriminate littering.
Abdulai Tei Nene, popularly known as Olembe, and the Assembly Member for the Oblogo Electoral Area, urged residents to refrain from dumping waste into gutters, particularly when it rains.
He warned that individuals caught flouting sanitation rules would face prosecution under local government bye-laws.
He also called on business owners and residents’ associations to collaborate with the Assembly and sanitation stakeholders to ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for sustainable growth and development.
