In response to a recent spike in COVID-19 cases at the University of Ghana, Legon, the Minister responsible for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has undertaken a working visit to the institution to assess firsthand the adherence to safety protocols.
During his visit, the Minister inspected the university’s clinic and provided essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), including hand sanitizers, nose masks, and PPE apparels.
Professor Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, stated that the university has implemented drastic measures to curb the spread of the virus. These include the suspension of large social gatherings unrelated to education. He emphasized that a complete closure of the school was deemed an overreaction, hence the focus on public sensitization and adherence to safety guidelines.
Professor Awandare acknowledged the crucial assistance from the Ghana Health Service, which has contributed to a decline in reported cases. He expressed confidence in the positive actions and results being achieved.
Following his visit to the university clinic, the Minister proceeded to the University of Ghana Medical Centre to ascertain if the facility had recorded any COVID-19 cases. Fortunately, no cases have been reported at the Medical Centre.
The Minister is expected to provide a detailed briefing on the situation to the public on the floor of Parliament.
