In a ceremony marked by deep diplomatic warmth and mutual respect, President John Dramani Mahama has conferred the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The honor was presented during a state banquet held in Accra on Wednesday, recognizing Prime Minister Modi’s outstanding leadership and his pivotal role in advancing Ghana-India relations.
The award is one of Ghana’s highest state honors, reserved for individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the country’s development or to the advancement of international cooperation.
President Mahama, in his remarks, praised Prime Minister Modi’s remarkable life journey from humble beginnings assisting his family at a tea stall in Vadnagar to becoming India’s fourteenth Prime Minister and the first to secure three consecutive terms in office.
“Prime Minister Modi’s story is a testament to the power of vision, service, and resilience,” President Mahama stated.
“From Gujarat to the global stage, his leadership has not only transformed India but also deepened ties between our two great nations.”
The citation accompanying the award celebrated Prime Minister Modi’s transformative national reforms, such as the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which unified India’s internal market, and signature programs like Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, which have revitalized domestic industry and promoted national self-reliance.
Modi was also lauded for his international diplomacy and commitment to multilateral cooperation through platforms like the G20 Summit and the International Solar Alliance — initiatives aligned with global efforts toward climate action and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
Particular praise was given to Modi’s “Act East” and “Neighbourhood First” policies, which have positioned India as a strategic and stabilizing force in global affairs.
Under his leadership, Ghana-India relations have flourished.
President Mahama cited key areas of bilateral cooperation, including India’s generous grant toward the establishment of Ghana’s first Foreign Service Institute a landmark in Ghana’s diplomatic training and international engagement.
“This honor reflects not just our appreciation for Prime Minister Modi’s global leadership, but also the enduring bond between Ghana and India a relationship grounded in shared values, mutual respect, and solidarity among nations of the Global South,” the President noted.
Accepting the honor, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to the people of Ghana and reaffirmed India’s commitment to continued partnership across areas such as education, technology, trade, and capacity building.
The event was attended by senior government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and members of the Indian diaspora in Ghana, underscoring the strong cultural and economic ties between the two nations.
