The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is preparing to re-establish its full diplomatic presence in Tehran, a press release from the Ministry has revealed. The move, expected to be finalized in the coming days, will see the reopening of the Ghanaian Embassy in Iran, which was temporarily closed in June amid heightened security concerns on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
The embassy’s closure in June this year was a swift and decisive action taken by the government to ensure the safety of its diplomatic staff and Ghanaian nationals in the wake of escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
At the time, Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the immediate evacuation of all citizens, including diplomats, students, and professionals, citing the potential for conflict as the primary motivator.
The decision to reopen the mission, according to the Ministry underscores a commitment to resuming normal diplomatic and consular services and signals a de-escalation of the regional security situation. While the embassy’s operations were reduced to the barest minimum in Tel Aviv, the complete closure in Tehran highlighted the government’s concern for the well-being of its citizens in the area.
Ghana and Iran have a long-standing history of cordial relations, with formal diplomatic ties established in 1974. Although the embassy in Tehran was temporarily closed for economic reasons in the 1980s, it was re-established in 2008 and has since played a vital role in strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Both nations have actively engaged in a Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), with the most recent session held in May 2022, to explore mutual benefits in various sectors, including agriculture, energy, and trade.
The reopening of the embassy is expected to facilitate the resumption of these crucial bilateral discussions and provide much-needed support for the Ghanaian community in Iran.
As the security situation in the region stabilizes, Ghana is reaffirming its commitment to international law and diplomacy, demonstrating its resolve to protect its national interests while fostering peaceful and productive relationships on the global stage.
The Ministry, as stated in the press release is committed to ensuring the safety of all Ghanaians in that region and vowed to update the public when the need arises.
