As part of activities marking Pink October, the Young Progressive Network, in collaboration with the Magdee Global Foundation, the Assembly Member for the Gbawe East Electoral Area, Mr. Benjamin Ken Lartey, and the Unit Committee Members, organized a breast cancer awareness and health screening exercise for residents of Gbawe in the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly.
The exercise, held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, sought to educate the community on breast cancer, emphasize the importance of early detection, and encourage healthier lifestyle habits.
Participants also received general health screenings to help improve overall wellness in the municipality.
October is globally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a period dedicated to creating awareness, promoting early screening, and supporting individuals affected by the disease. The organizers stressed that timely detection remains one of the most effective ways to reduce breast cancer-related deaths.
Addressing participants, Mr. Patrick Asford Boadu, a member and convener of the Young Progressive Network, noted that breast cancer is not a disease affecting only women, as commonly believed.
“So long as one has breast tissue, they can be affected by breast cancer. That is why we are using this platform to educate both men and women on the importance of early detection and screening,” he said.
In addition to the breast cancer screening, attendees benefited from other essential health checks, including malaria testing, blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar level assessments, and medical consultations.
To further support healthcare accessibility in the municipality, the organizers also held an NHIS registration exercise for residents with expired cards as well as those without any insurance coverage. The team plans to register over 500 community members to enhance access to primary healthcare services.
The event received support from various partnering organizations, including Green Land Medical Suppliers, located at Busia Junction near the Ghana Immigration Office, and Rockma Pharma Ghana Limited, who provided medical supplies and other essential resources for the success of the program.
This initiative forms part of a continuous effort to strengthen community health awareness, promote preventive care, and build a more informed and health-conscious population within the Weija-Gbawe Municipality.
