Felix Odartey Lamptey, Municipal Chief Executive for Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly on Thursday joined officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Disaster Volunteer Groups (DVGs), local fishermen, and community stakeholders to undertake a major decongestion exercise on the Densu River beneath the main Oblogo-Tetegu Bridge.

The exercise, held on May 7, 2026, formed part of efforts to facilitate the smooth flow of water from the Densu River through the Weija Dam spillway into the sea during periods of heavy rainfall and dam spillage.

The operation involved staff from NADMO headquarters led by Mr. Amo Yartey, Director of the Inspectorate Division, and Mr. Moses Anabah, Head of DVGs and leader of the national operations team.

They were joined by the Weija-Gbawe Municipal NADMO office headed by Mr. Emmanuel Kwame Essel, NADMO Director for the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, members of the Disaster Volunteer Group within the Oblogo Electoral Area, Assemblyman Hon. Abdullah Tei, popularly known as “Olebe,” and some local fishermen.

During the clean-up exercise, weeds and debris that had accumulated beneath sections of the bridge and along portions of the river were cleared to reduce the risk of flooding in surrounding communities.

As part of support for the operation, Mr. Moses Anabah presented several items, including bags of rice, life jackets, cooking oil, and Wellington boots to assist volunteers and personnel who participated in the exercise.

The MCE also donated an undisclosed amount of money to support the activities of the volunteers.

Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Felix Odartey Lamptey commended NADMO officials, DVG members, and the fishermen for their commitment toward environmental sanitation and flood prevention within the municipality.

He further urged residents living along water bodies to desist from dumping refuse into drains and rivers, especially during the rainy season, stressing that such practices contribute significantly to flooding.

Mr. Emmanuel Kwame Essel also expressed appreciation to the NADMO headquarters staff, the MCE, and all stakeholders for their support and cooperation toward the success of the exercise.
