The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced that major upgrade works on key electricity sub-transmission lines in the Greater Kumasi area are expected to be completed by June 5, 2026.
According to a press release issued on May 29, the project covers the upgrade of transmission lines from the KNUST Primary Substation to the Kaase Primary Substation, as well as from Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply Point in Kumasi.
ECG explained that the works involve replacing existing 265 square millimetre conductors with 400 square millimetre conductors, alongside the replacement of weak cables, to improve electricity transmission capacity and enhance the reliability and stability of power supply within the Ashanti Region.
The company stated that the completion of the project is expected to significantly improve power supply reliability and voltage quality for residents and businesses in Kaase, Kuntenase, Sewua, Bekwai and surrounding communities.
ECG further indicated that the project would strengthen the sub-transmission link between the Kumasi 1 (K1) and Kumasi 2 (K2) Bulk Supply Points, thereby boosting the resilience of the electricity network across the region.
The power distributor apologised to customers and residents for the inconvenience caused during the execution of the works, describing the temporary disruptions as necessary to secure a more reliable electricity supply for Greater Kumasi.
The statement was signed by Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager for External Communications at ECG.
