The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed as fake a widely circulated notice purportedly issued by Cambodian immigration authorities directing African nationals, including Ghanaians, to leave Cambodia by May 31, 2026, or face arrest and other penalties.
In a press release issued in Accra on Friday, May 29, the Ministry said the document, which has been circulating on both social and traditional media platforms, falsely claimed that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and other African countries were being targeted under new immigration measures in Cambodia.
According to the Ministry, diplomatic engagements with Cambodian authorities confirmed that the alleged notice was not issued by any official state institution in Cambodia.
“The Ministry wishes to assure the public that following diplomatic engagements with the relevant Cambodian authorities, it has been confirmed that the said notice is absolutely fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia,” the statement said.
The Ministry further noted that Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration under the Ministry of Interior had also issued an official clarification describing the notice as “completely untrue.”
Government urged the public and media organisations to disregard the false document and avoid sharing unverified information capable of causing fear and anxiety among affected persons and their families.
Despite debunking the viral notice, the Ministry acknowledged that some Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia had previously expressed interest in voluntarily returning home.
It disclosed that through Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to Cambodia, government had already facilitated the evacuation of 85 Ghanaians between March and May 2026.
The Ministry added that arrangements were underway to assist an additional 76 Ghanaians currently in Cambodia who have also indicated their desire to return to Ghana.
“The Ministry will continue to work in close collaboration with all relevant authorities to ensure the safety, welfare and protection of Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia,” the statement added.
Government also commended Cambodian authorities for their cooperation and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Ghanaians abroad while urging citizens to rely solely on official sources for information concerning Ghanaian nationals overseas.
