The National Coordinator of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), Ms. Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, has called on young people to embrace responsible mining as a pathway to sustainable development, job creation, and community transformation.
She made the call during the launch of the Akyem Kotoku Area Cooperative Mining Scheme in the Birim North District, an initiative aimed at promoting responsible, sustainable, and community-driven mining practices within Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.

According to Ms. Mawuenyefia, cooperative mining presents a unique opportunity for local communities to harness their natural resources in a manner that creates jobs, generates wealth, and supports long-term development while safeguarding the environment.
She stressed that the future of Ghana’s small-scale mining industry depends on responsible practices, environmental stewardship, and strong community participation, urging miners to operate within approved legal and regulatory frameworks.
The rCOMSDEP National Coordinator noted that sustainable mining must go hand in hand with accountability and the protection of natural resources to ensure that mining activities benefit both present and future generations.
The launch of the Akyem Kotoku Cooperative Mining Scheme marks another milestone in efforts to formalise the small-scale mining sector and expand economic opportunities for local communities through structured and responsible mining operations.
The initiative forms part of rCOMSDEP’s broader agenda to build a more professional, accountable, and sustainable mining industry that contributes meaningfully to national development while protecting Ghana’s environment.
