The Accra High Court has dismissed an application by lawyer and Member of Parliament, Andy Appiah-Kubi, seeking to withdraw his legal representation for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, in an ongoing case before the court.
The application was filed by Appiah-Kubi, who cited reasons for his decision to discontinue his legal services to the NPP stalwart. However, after considering the submission, the court declined the request and directed that the legal representation remain in place for the time being.
The case is linked to legal proceedings involving Chairman Wontumi in relation to a matter concerning Samreboi in the Western North Region. Details of the substantive case continue to be the subject of ongoing court proceedings.
During the hearing, the court emphasized the need to ensure the smooth administration of justice and avoid any actions that could potentially delay the trial process. The judge consequently dismissed the application and maintained the existing legal arrangement.
The ruling means that Appiah-Kubi remains counsel on record for Chairman Wontumi unless further directions are issued by the court or alternative legal arrangements are approved in accordance with the law.
Neither Chairman Wontumi nor his legal team immediately commented on the court’s decision following the hearing.
The case has attracted significant public attention due to Chairman Wontumi’s prominence within the governing New Patriotic Party and the broader political implications surrounding the proceedings.
The matter has been adjourned to a later date as the court continues hearing the substantive issues before it.
