The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, is undertaking a strategic working visit with key power sector stakeholders to study world-class operational frameworks, advanced technologies and international best practices in battery energy storage systems as Ghana prepares to roll out the first phase of its landmark 200MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project.
The visit forms part of government’s efforts to ensure that the country’s battery storage infrastructure is developed in line with global standards, enhancing the integration of renewable energy into the national electricity grid.
According to Dr. Jinapor, the practical benchmarking exercise is providing Ghana with valuable technical knowledge and operational experience that will guide the successful implementation of the ambitious project.
“I am currently on a strategic working visit with power sector stakeholders, engaging global pioneers to study world-class operational frameworks, technological advancements and best practices in energy storage,” the Minister said.
He explained that observing utility-scale battery energy storage facilities in operation is equipping Ghana with practical insights needed to deliver a resilient and efficient electricity system.
“This hands-on benchmarking is vital as the government rolls out the first phase of Ghana’s landmark 200MW Battery Energy Storage System.
Witnessing these sophisticated, utility-scale setups in action is giving us the exact blueprints needed to ensure our upcoming solar-integrated grid deployment is resilient, highly efficient and built to world-class standards,” Dr. Jinapor stated.
The Minister said the Battery Energy Storage System will play a critical role in strengthening the reliability of Ghana’s electricity network by supporting greater integration of renewable energy, improving grid stability and enhancing energy security.
Government considers the project a major pillar of its Green Transition Agenda, which seeks to diversify Ghana’s energy mix, promote cleaner sources of power and build a modern electricity infrastructure capable of supporting industrialisation and sustainable economic growth.
The working visit is also expected to strengthen collaboration with international industry leaders and provide opportunities for technology transfer as Ghana accelerates the deployment of advanced energy storage solutions.
Dr. Jinapor reaffirmed government’s commitment to adopting proven global technologies and best practices to ensure that the country’s energy transition delivers reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity for households, businesses and industries.
“Our objective is to ensure that Ghana adopts the best technologies and international best practices as we modernise our energy infrastructure.
We are determined to build a resilient power sector that supports economic transformation and delivers reliable electricity to all Ghanaians,” he said.
