Security analyst and Executive Director of the Jatikay Centre, Adib Saani, has expressed concern over the escalating public dispute surrounding the funeral arrangements of the late Apostle Professor Kwadwo Safo, warning that the situation now poses a significant public safety risk.
In a statement, Saani said the disagreement had moved beyond a private family matter, citing recent developments including an earlier shooting incident, ongoing legal proceedings, and conflicting public positions adopted by the parties involved.
According to him, the combination of these factors has created a volatile environment that requires careful handling by both the stakeholders and state security agencies.
“The situation is particularly concerning because both sides appear determined to pursue their respective positions,” he noted, adding that reports suggesting one party is relying on the courts while the other intends to proceed with the funeral as planned could heighten tensions.
Saani cautioned that such circumstances could attract emotionally charged supporters, increasing the risk of confrontation even if the principal parties have no intention of resorting to violence.
He appealed to all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize the dignity of the deceased and public safety over competing interests.
“No funeral should become a flashpoint for violence or disorder,” he stressed.
The security analyst also called on the Ghana Police Service and other relevant state institutions to undertake a comprehensive security risk assessment ahead of all funeral-related activities.
He urged the police to maintain a strong but impartial security presence, emphasizing the importance of intelligence-led policing, early engagement with stakeholders, effective crowd management, and the strict enforcement of any lawful court directives.
Saani further advised security agencies to continue monitoring the evolving situation closely and respond proactively to any emerging threats.
“Preventive action at this stage is far preferable to crisis management after violence has occurred,” he stated.
He concluded by emphasizing that disputes over succession, funeral arrangements, or estate matters should be resolved through lawful and peaceful means.
“The greatest tribute that can be paid to the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo is to ensure that his final journey is marked by dignity, unity, and peace not conflict,” Saani said.
