Dr Charles Wereko Brobbey has said that one of the biggest disappointments in his life was to see the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Presidency close down radio stations.
According to him, the President was in his early days the Lawyer for the Independent Media Corporation that fought for the independence of the media.
He said in his life, he never expected one of the biggest architects of media freedom, pluralism and independence to shut down voices opposed to his ideas.
To the old Wereko Brobbey, the National Communications Authority is currently the biggest pusher against the independence and freedom of the media; a situation he describes as worrying.
“That is not the issue, the Institution that should have dealt with them is not the NCA. If you look at the UNESCO definition of freedom and Independence of the media, they said it must be free of governmental control. The NCA is a government agency with the Minister who has political control. That is why the constitution in its wisdom set up a National Media Commission.”
About fifty-seven broadcasting stations have been shut down by the National Communications Authority (NCA), the Communications regulator and radio-frequency licensing body in Ghana.
Fifty-seven out of the 144 Frequency Modulation (FM) stations were cited for various infractions in an audit exercise by the NCA.
However, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has since issued back their licenses and the radio stations are preparing to start their operations.
