Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed has officially been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The ceremony, held at Parliament House, was presided over by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, marking the formal induction of the new legislator into the House.

Representing the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jamal’s entry into Parliament follows a decisive victory in the by-election held on March 3. The electoral process was necessitated by the vacancy created following the death of the late MP, Naser Toure Mahama, in January this year. Jamal secured the seat with 10,884 votes, representing approximately 63.33% of the total valid votes, significantly outpacing his main rival from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Baba Ali Yussif, who polled 4,009 votes.

During the proceedings, Speaker Bagbin delivered a stern charge to the new Member of Parliament, emphasizing the weight of the responsibility now resting on his shoulders. The Speaker warned that poor performance or a lack of focus on the needs of the Ayawaso East constituents would result in fierce opposition in future elections. Bagbin further indicated his intention to closely monitor the MP’s service delivery and commitment to his parliamentary duties.

The swearing-in also served as a catalyst for political debate on the floor of the House. Second Deputy Minority Whip Habib Iddrisu, speaking on behalf of the Minority, argued that the by-election results actually reflected a decline in national support for the NDC. He further alluded to internal friction within the Majority caucus, claiming that certain regional leaders had initially opposed Mr. Jamal’s candidacy.

In a swift rebuttal, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga welcomed the new MP, describing him as a highly competent addition to the caucus. Ayariga expressed confidence that Baba Jamal’s experience would significantly bolster the Majority side during parliamentary debates and strengthen their position against the Minority.

A lawyer by profession and a former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed previously served as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria. While his diplomatic tenure concluded under President John Dramani Mahama amidst a competitive internal primary.
