The Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has accused the Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin of displaying unnecessary machoism in leading the house.
He is of the view that the seasoned lawmaker is applying his own sets of laws outside the standing orders ad damn the consequences when he should be carrying the whole house along with in the discharge of his duties.
Speaking to the media after the New Patriotic Party(NPP) side walked out following some decision made by the Speaker on Friday night during the approval of the 2022 budget, he noted that certain conducts of Alban Bagbin were becoming unbecoming.
“I believe you are all witnesses to the development in the house. Increasingly we are all witnessing some machoism in the house. It started at this debate when we had to proceed to interrogate the policies and principles of this budget when without any provocation the speaker indicated and that from now, he should be recognized as the number two gentleman of this country and not third.
We all laughed over it and thought it was a joke. Can we believe that we come to this house concluding the debate and the Minister of House makes an application…don’t forget the Minister of Finance is a member of the house without voting rights”? He revealed
According to him, the speaker issued his personal directive and demanded the application of the finance minister be subjected to vote without Mr Ken Ofori Atta in the chamber.
“The Speaker who thinks he can issue his own personal directive to Ministers now says that simple application must be subjected to vote. That simple vote, the man who makes the application must be jettison from the plenary”, he bemoaned.
