The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has pledged a donation of US$250,000 (approximately GH¢3 million) to support victims of the recent devastating floods in Ghana.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who disclosed that Ghana’s Foreign Ministry had been officially notified of the regional body’s decision.
In a statement, Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa said the donation reflects ECOWAS’ solidarity with Ghana during the difficult period following the floods, which have affected several communities and displaced many residents.
He assured the public that the Ministry would ensure the entire amount is transferred to the appropriate authorities immediately after the funds are received.
“As can be expected, the Foreign Ministry will hand over the entire funds as soon as we receive it in our accounts,” he stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in handling the donation.
The Foreign Affairs Minister also conveyed the Government of Ghana’s profound gratitude to ECOWAS for the timely intervention.
“The Government of Ghana conveys boundless appreciation to ECOWAS for their solidarity and true African compassion,” he said.
The financial support is expected to contribute to ongoing relief efforts aimed at assisting affected families, restoring livelihoods, and addressing the humanitarian impact of the recent floods.
The donation underscores ECOWAS’ commitment to supporting member states during emergencies and reinforces regional cooperation in responding to natural disasters across West Africa.
