The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Effutu has alleged that the constituency voters register has been bloated by over 3,000 names.
The NDC contends that many “illegal voters,” initially identified in past elections, still remain on the 2024 register and accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of colluding with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to add more than 3,000 new names to voters roll.
The Effutu NDC in the lead up to the 2020 election alleged that the constituency register had been inflated by an estimated 20,000 voters.
The NDC parliamentary candidate for the Effutu constituency, Dr. James Kofi Annan says the party’s concerns regarding the integrity of the constituency register has been confirmed by a series of happenings during the voters registration and transfer exercises.
He noted that over 70% of the voter transfers conducted by the Electoral Commission this year are questionably, raising alarms about potential voter importation into the constituency.
“The total number of voters transferred in the Effutu Constituency has jumped from 7,024 to 9,897 without NDC oversight,” Dr. Kofi Annan said.
He further alleged that some 126 military personnel have been unlawfully added to the Effutu voters register, which he suspects is to further ulterior motives aimed at skewing the electoral process in favor of the NPP.
“We will not tolerate any additional illegal additions to the register,” Dr. Kofi Annan said, calling for the immediate removal of all unlawfully transferred voters from the 2024 Effutu voters register.
The NDC PC pointed out that Effutu, despite having a lower general population is said to have recorded the highest number of voter transfers in the entire Central Region.
Dr. Kofi Annan was convinced that such a trend was clear evidence of deliberate and widespread voter importation which has significantly impacted the integrity of the upcoming elections.
He demanded prompt action from the Electoral Commission to rectify the situation to salvage the integrity of the elections in the constituency.
“We have conducted an independent audit and found that over 3,009 names on the voters register cannot be accounted for. These findings raise serious questions about the credibility of the register and the legitimacy of the electoral process in Effutu.”
He has called on the Electoral Commission of to undertake a thorough audit of the voters’ register and to maintain transparency regarding all changes made to it.
