The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Emelia Arthur, has underscored the critical role of Ghana’s fisheries sector in ensuring national food and nutritional security.

She made this remark while delivering a speech at the official launch of the 41st National Farmers Day celebration in Accra.

Hon. Arthur emphasized that fish remains an indispensable component of the Ghanaian diet and a vital contributor to public health and economic stability.

“By providing safe, affordable, and nutritious fish, our fishers play a critical role in improving the health of our population, reducing malnutrition, and promoting balanced diets across the country,” she stated.

The Minister noted that over 60 percent of Ghana’s animal protein intake comes from fish, making the fisheries sector not just a source of livelihood but also a pillar of national well-being.

“If 60% of our animal protein as a people is from fish, then fish is not just a thing, a livelihood, but it’s also importantly about our nutritional security, our food security, and, importantly, our national security,” Hon. Arthur stressed.

She commended the sponsors and partners who have consistently supported the National Farmers Day over the years, recognizing their role in sustaining one of Ghana’s most celebrated national events.

“As we launch the 41st National Farmers Day celebration, I wish to sincerely acknowledge our sponsors and partners for their invaluable contributions over the years,” she said.

Hon. Arthur reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development to advancing sustainable practices across all sub-sectors — marine, inland, and aquaculture.

“As a ministry, we will continue to pay the necessary attention to marine fisheries, pay more attention to inland fisheries, and focus even more on aquaculture so that we can balance our fish production requirements in the country and export more to earn more,” she explained.

The Minister called on all stakeholders, including development partners, fisherfolk, and industry players, to continue their partnership with the government toward the success of this year’s celebration and beyond.

“I take this opportunity to call for your continued partnership and support towards the successful organization of the National Farmers Day,” she appealed.

“Together, let us make this year’s event a true celebration of the men, women, and young people whose efforts sustain our nation’s food security and economic growth.”

Looking ahead, Hon. Arthur urged collective action and renewed commitment toward building a fisheries and aquaculture sector that is both sustainable and inclusive.

“Let us renew our collective commitment to building a fisheries and aquaculture sector that is sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous,” she said.

“Together, we have the power to secure the future of this vital industry for generations to come.”

She concluded by encouraging all stakeholders to participate actively in the upcoming National Farmers Day celebration, describing it as a platform to honor the tireless efforts of Ghanaians who feed the nation and drive its economy.

“I encourage all stakeholders to participate actively and contribute to the success of this year’s celebration,” she added.
