Ghana is positioning itself to become Africa’s leading digital trade hub through bold national initiatives, major investments in digital infrastructure and strategic partnerships. This is according to Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Speaking on her behalf at the opening of the 2025 National ICT Week in Accra held under the theme “Ghana as Africa’s Digital Trade Hub: Innovation, Policy and Partnerships for the Future,” her Political Advisor on Political Affairs, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo noted that Ghana’s stability, democratic credentials and dynamic economy provide the foundation for digital transformation.
Among key programs highlighted were the 24-Hour Economy Initiative, designed to boost productivity by enabling businesses to operate around the clock and the One Million Coders Project, a nationwide effort to equip young people with coding and software engineering skills to take advantage of opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Government, he said, is also expanding the national fiber-optic backbone and broadband networks to extend high speed internet access to schools, hospitals, businesses and homes, bridging the urban-rural digital divide.
The launch of the Ghana.Gov platform, a one stop digital gateway for government services, was cited as another milestone in reducing bureaucracy and improving transparency.
Ghana is further recognized as the only African country with a fully interoperable instant payment system, enabling seamless transfers between banks and mobile money wallets.
This, according to the vice President has expanded e-commerce and deepened financial inclusion.
He stressed the importance of collaboration among government, entrepreneurs, the private sector, academia, development partners and the diaspora to sustain progress.
Safeguarding digital trust through the Data Protection Act and aligning with AfCFTA’s Digital Trade Protocol were also emphasized as critical to building confidence in Ghana’s digital economy.
“Ghana is ready,” he declared, urging stakeholders to innovate, invest and partner with government to make Ghana the undisputed digital trade hub of Africa.
