The Government of Ghana has secured a major international partnership aimed at creating employment opportunities for Ghanaian nurses and strengthening healthcare cooperation between Ghana and the United States.

In a significant move that underscores the government’s commitment to job creation and skills development, Ghana signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the City of Columbus, Ohio, to establish the Ghana-Columbus Nursing Partnership Programme.

The agreement, signed at the Michael B. Coleman Government Center in Columbus, will provide structured and legal pathways for qualified Ghanaian nurses to access employment opportunities in the United States while promoting professional exchanges and institutional collaboration in the health sector.

The pact was signed by Ghana’s Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, and the Mayor of Columbus, Andrew J. Ginther.

The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to leverage international partnerships to create decent jobs for Ghanaian professionals and position the country’s skilled workforce within the global labour market.

Addressing the signing ceremony, Mayor Ginther acknowledged Ghana’s growing reputation for producing highly trained healthcare professionals and expressed confidence that the partnership would benefit both countries.

Health Minister Akandoh described the agreement as a strategic investment in Ghana’s human capital, emphasizing that it goes beyond labour mobility to include skills transfer, healthcare innovation, research collaboration and institutional strengthening.

He said the programme would create opportunities for Ghanaian nurses to gain international experience while contributing to the advancement of healthcare delivery in both Ghana and the United States.

Labour Minister Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum noted that the partnership reflects growing international confidence in the quality of Ghana’s workforce and aligns with government efforts to expand employment opportunities for young professionals.

According to him, the framework could serve as a model for similar agreements with other states across the United States and beyond.

The successful conclusion of the agreement also highlights the growing role of Ghana’s diplomatic missions in advancing the country’s economic and labour interests abroad.

Deputy Head of Mission at the Ghana Embassy in Washington, D.C., Ambassador Mrs. Jane Gasu Aheto, commended the Ghanaian community in Columbus and stakeholders who worked tirelessly to bring the initiative to fruition.

She stressed that the Embassy remains committed to supporting programmes that create opportunities for Ghanaians while strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and the United States.

Mrs. Aheto urged all parties to ensure the agreement delivers measurable benefits, describing it as a practical example of how diplomacy can translate into jobs, skills development and improved livelihoods for citizens.

The partnership builds on the Sister-City relationship established between Columbus and Greater Accra in 2015 and is expected to deepen people-to-people relations while opening a new chapter in healthcare cooperation.

Analysts say the agreement represents a significant achievement for the government and Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the United States, demonstrating how international engagement can be harnessed to create employment opportunities and promote national development.

The initiative was facilitated through the collaborative efforts of Buckeye Africa Exchange, StrideHx and Columbus Sister Cities International.
