President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the creation of a state-of-the-art “Gold Village,” a specialized industrial hub dedicated to local jewelry production and value addition within Ghana’s gold sector.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Gold Board Taskforce, President Mahama said the initiative forms part of government’s broader agenda to industrialize the country’s natural resource base, create jobs, and retain more value from gold mined in Ghana.
“Ghana has long been a leading producer of gold, but for far too long, we have exported raw material and imported finished products,”
President Mahama stated. “This ‘Gold Village’ will be a centre for refining, designing, and manufacturing high-quality jewelry right here on our soil.”
The hub is expected to host training centres, design studios, and processing facilities, providing support for small and medium-scale artisans, as well as international-standard jewelry firms. President Mahama emphasized that the government will work closely with stakeholders across the mining and creative arts sectors to ensure the success of the project.
He further noted that the initiative is aligned with Ghana’s commitment to sustainable resource management and the development of a value-adding economy.
“With the support of the Gold Board, this vision will ensure that Ghanaian talent, culture, and craftsmanship are fully reflected in products that reach both local and global markets,” he added.
The “Gold Village” concept is part of a new strategic shift in Ghana’s natural resources policy, which aims to strengthen domestic industry, combat illicit financial flows, and boost export revenues through beneficiation.
