Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to financing the construction of a bridge over the Volta Lake at Volivo, a critical component of Ghana’s Eastern Corridor road project.
The assurance came during a courtesy call on President John Mahama by Miyazaki Katsura, Senior Executive Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), on Tuesday.
Katsura expressed Japan’s satisfaction that the Volivo Bridge is a priority under President Mahama’s ambitious $10 billion “Big Push” infrastructure agenda.
The initiative, detailed in the 2025 national budget, plans to invest $2 billion annually over five years in key sectors such as transportation, education, and healthcare.
“We are happy that the Volivo Bridge project is captured under the Big Push initiative,” said Katsura, adding that JICA is ready to engage further with the Japanese government to move the project forward.
He also announced that a technical team would soon be deployed to Ghana to assess the additional funding needed.
The project had earlier secured Japanese support during a visit by then-President Mahama to Tokyo in a previous term.
In a related development, President Mahama accepted an invitation to attend the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in August, where he is expected to engage with Japanese officials to finalize funding arrangements for the bridge construction.
