Former boss for the West African Network for Peacebuilding and former Deputy Foreign Minister Emmanuel Bombande has wondered how Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came to head the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament.
He was speaking on Joy News monitored by MyNewsGh.com.
His comment comes after the Multimedia Group, operators of Joy FM and Luv FM lodged a formal complaint at the Ashanti Regional Police Command against the Assin Central MP for allegedly issuing a threat against the life of Erastus Asare Donkor, a journalist with the Multimedia Group.
A statement issued by the Multimedia Group on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, and addressed to the Deputy Ashanti Regional Regional Police Commander and the Crime Officer, said Mr Agyapong, who is also the Chairman of the country’s Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament has made life-threatening comments against the Multimedia journalist for his “journalist work that the latter undertook during the recent shootings and killing incident at Ejura, and his appearance before the Kingsley Koomson Committee investigating the incident.”
Mr Bombande said the threats against the journalist “are abhorrent” describing the MP as temperamentally unfit for the chairmanship of the esteemed parliamentary committee. He expressed doubt that the police will take any action.
“I am compelled to say that the impunity will continue. I am happy all of you have mentioned the role of Kennedy Agyapong. He is no ordinary member of parliament. He is the Chair of the Defence and Interior. He travels internationally Towards the end he said he travelled to the CAR. He cannot pretend to be unaware about wars in other places.”
Mr Bombande called on the NPP to call their MP to order.
“It is in the interest of the NPP not allow a member of their party to be the one seen always when it comes to the threat against media practitioners. They can get Honourable Kennedy Agyapong to issue an unqualified apology of his own conduct against media personnel to assuage the anger” he added.
