The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) today announced a substantial increase in the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) cash grant, effective with the 96th cycle disbursement for March and April 2025. This move, championed by the government of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, aims to combat the rising cost of living and enhance the real value of the grant for vulnerable households across Ghana.
Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, has officially commenced the nationwide disbursement, emphasizing the government’s commitment to stimulating economic growth and development for all citizens.
A key highlight of this new cycle is the implementation of “indexation of the LEAP cash grant against inflation.” This policy adjustment is expected to gradually increase the grant amount to ensure that the real value of the benefit for households is not eroded by inflationary pressures.
“The Government is taking measures to enhance the real value of the LEAP cash grant and its impact on a range of development indicators such as nutrition, health, schooling, investment, and inclusion in productive activities,” stated Dr. Lartey.
The revised cash grant amounts are as follows:
One eligible member household: Increased from GH₵256.00 to GH₵320.00
Two eligible member households: Increased from GH₵304.00 to GH₵380.00
Three eligible member households: Increased from GH₵352.00 to GH₵440.00
Four or more eligible member households: Increased from GH₵424.00 to GH₵530.00
In a clear demonstration of its commitment, the Minister revealed that the government has allocated an unprecedented GH₵953.5 million to the LEAP Programme in the 2025 budget. This, according to her marks a significant increase from the GH₵728.8 million allocated in 2024.
Furthermore, approval has been granted to increase the number of beneficiary households from the current 350,000 to 400,000 with an ongoing reassessment exercise to facilitate reaching this target in subsequent disbursements.
Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey established that for the 96th cycle specifically, the government has released GH₵139,257,363.97 to be disbursed to 350,000 LEAP beneficiary households across 260 metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies. The nationwide disbursement began on Monday, June 23, 2025.
The LEAP program continues to prioritize the most vulnerable segments of society. Each household receives payment based on their level of extreme poverty and the number of individuals with specific vulnerabilities. These categories include:
Orphans and Vulnerable Children
The Elderly (65 years and above) without support
Persons with Severe Disability who cannot easily work
Extremely poor pregnant women and lactating mothers with infants under 1 year
Dr. Lartey reminded LEAP beneficiary households to prioritize crucial areas for long-term well-being.
“May I remind LEAP beneficiary households to prioritize household nutrition, children’s education, and investment in income-generating activities,” she urged.
“They should equally begin to adopt a savings culture based on clear household consumption needs and goals. These efforts will go a long way to reduce poverty and contribute to the realization of the programme’s social protective objectives and related Sustainable Development Goals.”
The Minister concluded by expressing gratitude to the Ministry’s partners for their continuous support of the LEAP Programme and invited additional collaborations to address any existing gaps in the program’s coverage.
