President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has issued a clarion call to African leaders to unite in reshaping the global narrative around Africa’s public debt.
Speaking at the Presidential Dialogue on Public Debt in Africa, held in Lomé, Togo, President Mahama urged a collective continental approach anchored in courage, clarity, and commitment.
In a keynote address delivered at the high-level conference on Monday, President Mahama stressed the need for African nations to assert control over the debt discourse and actively advocate for equitable and sustainable financing frameworks.
“Ghana stands ready and will stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow African nations to champion the agenda,” he declared.
The dialogue convened heads of state, policymakers, and economic experts from across the continent to assess Africa’s debt vulnerabilities and explore innovative and collaborative solutions.
President Mahama emphasized that unity among African leaders is critical in addressing the continent’s financial challenges with renewed urgency and purpose.
“To walk this road together with courage, clarity, and commitment,” he urged, highlighting the importance of solidarity and shared vision in redefining Africa’s economic future.
Participants at the dialogue examined structural debt issues, external dependencies, and reform strategies aimed at promoting fiscal sovereignty and inclusive development.
The conference also sought to elevate Africa’s voice on the global stage regarding debt restructuring and fair access to international credit systems.
President Mahama’s call comes at a time when many African economies face rising debt pressures amid global economic uncertainties.
His message resonated strongly with delegates who echoed the need for a united African stance in global financial negotiations.
The Lomé Presidential Dialogue marks a significant step toward building a cohesive African response to debt challenges—one that centers African priorities, leadership, and long-term economic transformation.
