President John Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to empowering women in the fisheries sector.
In his inaugural State of the Nation address to parliament following his 2024 election victory, President Mahama explained the role women play in various aspects of the industry, including fish processing, trading, and managing fisheries-related businesses.
To support women’s growth in fisheries, the President announced initiatives aimed at providing financial resources specifically for female fish processors and traders.
He said the effort aims to elevate their economic standing, increase their involvement in the sector, and enhance their contributions to the national economy.
The president indicated that the government’s commitment to empowering women in fisheries was part of a larger vision to transform the industry into a sustainable and productive sector.
“To increase value addition, we will promote the establishment of fish processing facilities, generate job opportunities, and enhance exports,” he stated.
“Our dedication to supporting women in fisheries is unwavering as we roll out programs designed to equip female fish processors and traders with financial resources and capacity-building support.”
Touching on aquaculture development, the President announced plans to offer financial and technical assistance to fish farmers, aiming to boost fish production and lessen reliance on imports.
He also addressed the situation concerning premix fuel, stating, “We have increased the supply of subsidized premix fuel to assist both artisanal and industrial fishers, ensuring it remains affordable and accessible.”
President John Dramani Mahama also pledged to invest in modern fish landing sites and cold storage facilities to enhance post-harvest handling, reduce losses, and improve the quality of fish products.
