President John Dramani Mahama has begun a major healthcare infrastructure project with the commencement of land preparation for the construction of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
The project, which is expected to replace the hospital’s ageing and dilapidated Maternity Unit, forms part of efforts by the government to expand access to specialised maternal and child healthcare and improve the quality of services at the country’s premier referral hospital.
The new facility is expected to be equipped with modern infrastructure and specialised units to provide comprehensive care for mothers, newborns and children.
Among the planned facilities are Obstetrics and Gynaecology Wards, Labour and Delivery Suites, Operating Theatres, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The block will also include an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, Antenatal and Postnatal Clinics, Fertility and Reproductive Health Clinics, as well as Breastfeeding and Family Planning Units.
An Emergency Obstetric Care Unit will provide specialised support for women experiencing pregnancy and childbirth complications, while a Diagnostic Imaging Department, laboratory and blood bank facilities will strengthen the hospital’s diagnostic and emergency care capacity.
The facility will further have a Pharmacy Department, Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Units, alongside teaching, research and conference facilities.
The construction of the 400-bed block is expected to significantly modernise maternal and child healthcare infrastructure at Korle Bu and provide a more integrated environment for clinical care, training and medical research.
The project represents a major investment in healthcare infrastructure and is expected to strengthen Korle Bu’s capacity to provide specialised services to patients referred from across the country.
