Health Minister says decisive action is restoring confidence in national healthcare
The Mahama administration has delivered on a major campaign pledge by clearing all outstanding arrears under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), amounting to GH¢603 million as of December 2024.
Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, made the announcement at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, July 18, 2025, describing it as proof of the government’s commitment to fixing challenges inherited in the healthcare financing system.
“I am proud to announce that all NHIS claims arrears totalling GH¢603 million as of December 2024 have been fully settled,” Mr. Akandoh said.
“This government, under President John Mahama, is not just talking about solutions — we are delivering results for the health sector.”
Mr. Akandoh also revealed that in just the first half of 2025, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) disbursed more than GH¢1.38 billion to healthcare providers nationwide, ensuring hospitals and clinics are resourced to serve citizens effectively.
“In the first six months of 2025 alone, over GH¢1.38 billion was disbursed to providers.
This is a testament to President Mahama’s resolve to build a reliable and people-centered healthcare system,” he added.
The Minister emphasized that these interventions reflect a broader strategy to make NHIS sustainable, eliminate systemic delays, and ensure that healthcare delivery remains accessible and equitable for all Ghanaians.
“This turnaround shows that under President Mahama’s leadership, we are not only stabilizing the NHIS but also transforming it into a scheme that works for everyone,” he stated.
