President John Dramani Mahama has directed the formation of an inter-agency task force to develop a comprehensive roadmap to prevent the trafficking of narcotic drugs through Ghana’s borders.
The directive followed an urgent meeting chaired by the President with the country’s security chiefs to review recent cases involving the trafficking of drugs out of Ghana’s ports.
At the meeting, President Mahama received a detailed briefing on ongoing investigations into the cases.
According to the briefing, 10 individuals, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), are currently being held as investigations continue.
The meeting also reviewed the existing structure and security systems at Ghana’s ports and borders and identified additional measures required to strengthen the country’s ability to detect and prevent narcotics trafficking.
President Mahama subsequently directed the formation of an inter-agency task force to translate the decisions taken at the meeting into a detailed action plan.
The task force has been given two weeks to present its roadmap outlining measures to prevent the trafficking of narcotic drugs through Ghana’s borders.
The directive comes as authorities intensify investigations into recent narcotic trafficking cases involving Ghana’s ports and security agencies.
