Ghana’s experience in regulating and developing its mining industry has attracted the attention of Malawi, as the Southern African country seeks to strengthen institutional capacity and improve the management of its mineral resources.
As part of efforts to learn from Ghana’s mining sector, a high-level delegation from Malawi, led by the country’s Minister of Mining, Hon. Thoko Tembo, visited the Minerals Commission on Monday, October 26, 2026.

The visit formed part of a South-South Learning Exchange Programme on Mining and Mineral Sector Development, facilitated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Malawi in collaboration with UNDP Ghana and the Government of Malawi.
The delegation also paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, and engaged the management of the Minerals Commission.

During the engagement, the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Mr Isaac Tandoh, briefed the delegation on the Commission’s regulatory mandate and its contribution to the development of Ghana’s mineral resources.
He outlined the Commission’s role in overseeing mineral exploration and mining activities, administering mineral rights and supporting the development of the country’s mining industry.

The exchange comes against the background of growing interest among mineral-rich African countries in strengthening regulatory institutions, improving the governance of natural resources and ensuring that mining contributes meaningfully to national development.
Ghana, one of Africa’s established gold-producing countries, has accumulated considerable experience in mineral resource administration, licensing and mining-sector regulation.

For Malawi, the learning exchange provides an opportunity to examine Ghana’s institutional arrangements and regulatory experience as the country explores ways to develop its own mineral sector.
The programme also highlights the importance of cooperation among developing countries in sharing technical expertise, institutional experience and approaches to managing natural resources.
