The vice presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, has assured voters that a future NDC government will not entertain any form of mining that jeopardizes the environment.

According to her the party will not compromise on its commitment to ensuring mining is done responsibly.

Speaking at a mini rally in the Amenfi Central Constituency during her campaign tour of the Western Region, Professor Opoku Agyemang said the NDC recognizes the mining industry’s contribution to creating jobs and generating wealth but also takes seriously its duty to safeguard Ghana’s rich natural resources for future generations.

The NDC Vice Presidential Candidate said his party has taken note of the devastation that illegal mining has had on the environment particularly water bodies under the supervision of the Nana Akufo-Addo administration.

“Our commitment is to transform the industry, ensuring that every miner operates within a legal and sustainable framework,” she stated.

According to Professor Opoku Agyemang, the future of Ghana’s mining industry hinges on job creation that does not compromise environmental integrity.

“We will work hand-in-hand with communities to provide the necessary education and resources for responsible mining,” she said.

She expressed confidence that reforms in the mining sector could lead to improvements not only in the economy but also in community health and environmental quality.

She criticized the government for its failure to create jobs and for allowing the collapse of existing opportunities.

“Ghana discovered gold a long time ago, but we are now in a situation where our youth are left to engage in illegal mining due to a lack of viable employment options,” she said.

Professor Opoku Agyemang indicated that under an NDC administration led by flagbearer John Mahama, there would be a renewed focus on creating jobs that protect the country’s natural resources.

She reiterated John Mahama’s pledge to implement a 24-hour economy policy if elected, which she says will ensure that young Ghanaians can find meaningful employment.

“The 24-hour economy will create opportunities that align with our environmental goals while providing the youth with the jobs they so desperately need,” she said.
