For more than 4 days, the top hierarchy of the Ghana Police Service has kept an absolute silence following allegations that members of the police service picked up and eventually killed a young man from Nkoranza who allegedly spotted police involved in an armed robbery.
The story doesn’t however add up even as the police service is conducting their own investigations.
The family of a 28-year-old man who sparked the controversy, Albert Kwasi Donkor, alleged that their son suffered police brutality.
The multi-talented footballer and digital television installer are said to have sighted persons he knows to be policemen engaged in an armed robbery. He was supposed to make a police report the next day but was picked up.
The story goes that Albert Donkor went to Busunya, a town in the Nkoranza North Municipality on April 25, 2022, to allegedly work for some of his clients. When Donkor was returning to Nkoranza on his motorbike at about 10 pm that fateful day, he was allegedly accosted by armed robbers who manhandled him and took away his laptop, mobile phone and some other items.
After he was freed by these alleged robbers, Albert went home and his parents reportedly advised him to rest and report the incident to the police station the following morning.
He didn’t get to make the report as the police stormed Donkor’s house at about 1 am-midnight on 26th April and arrested him accusing him of being involved in an armed robbery.
Police officers stormed his Nkoranza home in an unregistered vehicle and while allegedly transporting him to supposedly show the syndicate’s hideout, they shot him dead.
The questions and alleged cover-up
It has been speculated that Albert Donkor saw policemen involved in the robbery and had informed his close friend who also informed the police and who in effect took action to allegedly silence him.
If Albert Donkor was robbed around 10 pm as reports say on 25th April 2022 and was picked up by Police approximately two to three hours later at 1 am on April 26th midnight, at what time did he inform his close friend who also informed the police?
Unless of course, the chain of events were so swift as to lead to the outcome being witnessed in this phone age when communicating is easier and faster. Also, the identity of the said friend has not been given nor has the person owned up.
The family became suspicious after Police refused to allow Albert Donkor’s mother to accompany them.
Police later told the family the deceased was hit by a bullet by a supposed member of an armed robbery gang when the victim was leading them to other accomplices. This is eerily similar to the story of the death of the two policemen involved in the Bullion Van robbery in Accra who was killed with a similar excuse.
Albert Donkor’s family were told this after several weeks of tossing them around by the Police.
Relatives, including the mother, were not told the whereabouts or the state of Albert Donkor until after 3-weeks after being tossed around Techiman, Ejura, Sunyani and Accra.
The youth side with their fellow Albert Donkor while the family believe their son is innocent. Police are yet to state their side.
