Managing Editor of The Hawk Newspaper, Charles McCarthy, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) risks remaining in opposition beyond 2028 unless it rebuilds its weakened party structures and restores discipline within its ranks.
Speaking on Radio Gold 90.5 FM’s Gold Morning Conversation, Mr McCarthy argued that the NPP currently lacks the organisational strength required to mount a successful return to power.
“The NPP should forget about 2028 with a party that has no legs,” he said, contending that internal discipline had deteriorated significantly under the previous administration.
According to him, the situation had reached a point where regional executives could openly attack senior members of the party without effective sanctions.
“By the time Akufo-Addo left office, a regional chairman could openly insult everybody and nobody cared. Discipline had broken down,” he stated.
Mr McCarthy pointed to the NPP’s performance in the 2024 general election as evidence of the scale of the party’s political decline, arguing that the outcome represented a rejection of the Akufo-Addo administration.
The Electoral Commission declared John Dramani Mahama winner of the 2024 presidential election with 56.55% of the valid votes in the results used for the declaration, while the NPP’s Dr Mahamudu Bawumia obtained 41.61%.
“2024 was a verdict on Akufo-Addo. It vindicated those of us who told them that this man was not fit for the job,” Mr McCarthy said.
He maintained that rebuilding the NPP would require strong leadership capable of restoring discipline and reorganising the party ahead of the next general election.
Mr McCarthy also argued that the next National Chairman must have sufficient financial independence to exercise authority within the party, warning that a chairman who depends heavily on a flagbearer for resources could struggle to provide independent leadership.
He said the NPP’s ability to rebuild its internal structures and restore discipline would be critical as the party reorganises following its 2024 electoral defeat.
